I will be ready “Day One,” to serve the residents of Ward 8 and the District of Columbia as a whole. I will work to reduce gun violence, empower our young people, help create quality housing and bring more food options to benefit all of Ward 8.

Salim Adofo is a committed public servant with over 20 years of experience in the local/federal government and the non-profit sector. His career of public service began as a member of the United States Army. Salim served honorably as a Specialist in the 125th Finance Battalion. Salim worked as a Project Coordinator for the Dean at the University of the District of Columbia, where he helped to establish educational programming for students.  He was elected by residents in 2018 to serve as a Commissioner on Advisory Neighborhood Commission 8C. In 2021, he was unanimously chosen by his peers to serve as chair of the commission.

In the non-profit sector, Salim worked as a tenant organizer.  He assisted over 800 Ward 8 residents in gaining access to legal support and emergency rental assistance to enable them to remain in their homes, because they have lost their income as a result of COVID-19. As a result of his efforts, new tenant associations have been formed as well as existing ones have been strengthened throughout Ward 8.

In response to the concerns of several residents and community groups regarding the quality of education in Ward 8, Salim along with National Society of Black Engineers, established the after school program titled, the Ward 8 STEM Academy. It has been successful in educating elementary and middle school students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts. Additionally, the initiative provides Ward 8 youth with an opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills and learn about conflict resolution.

During his tenure as a Commissioner, Salim has worked to improve traffic safety and infrastructure in Ward 8. Through his efforts, speed bumps have been installed near each school in his Single Member District. The District Department of Transportation has been able to resurface a variety of roads, fix potholes, and install raised sidewalks as a result of his coordination with the department. As part of his environmental justice efforts, he also established the "Clean Ward 8" initiative. Through the initiative, he coordinates monthly community clean-up events at schools, parks, and recreation centers to ensure that Ward 8 students live in a clean and safe environment. This led to the Mayor of the District of Columbia awarding Salim the "Community Impact of the Year Award," in 2021.

Salim is a proud graduate of the University of the District of Columbia. He is a member of Union Temple Baptist Church and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. Over the past few years, he has served on the boards of the United Planning Organization, Far South East Family Strengthening Collaborative and the NAACP DC Branch.  He currently resides in Congress Heights.

"As a Ward 8 Councilmember, it is my goal to bring all of Ward 8 together to make the community healthy, flourishing, and thriving."
